Health & Dental Insurance · Ottawa

Health and dental cover for the care you use.

Personal health and dental insurance may help with eligible expenses that provincial healthcare does not fully pay. Compare benefits for prescriptions, dental treatment, vision and other care alongside any workplace coverage.

What a plan may include

Start with the care your household needs.

Personal coverage may be useful when you work for yourself, change jobs, retire, or have limited workplace benefits. Available services and limits depend on the plan.

Prescription Drug Coverage

Eligible medications may be reimbursed subject to medical information, the drug formulary, generic-substitution requirements, deductibles, co-insurance and annual or lifetime limits.

Dental Coverage

Eligible preventive, basic and, in some plans, major dental services. Waiting periods, reimbursement percentages and maximums may apply.

Vision Care

Eligible eye examinations, prescription glasses or contact lenses within specified limits and frequency periods.

Paramedical Services

Coverage for eligible services from approved practitioners such as physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists or psychologists.

Medical Services and Supplies

Eligible ambulance services, medical equipment, nursing care, hearing aids or other specified expenses.

Travel-Related Emergency Coverage

Some plans may include limited emergency travel health benefits. A separate travel policy may still be appropriate depending on the trip and the coverage provided.

Covered services, practitioner requirements, deductibles, reimbursement percentages, waiting periods and maximums vary by plan.

Compare the usable coverage

What would you still pay yourself?

What you pay

Compare the premium with expected eligible benefits. Check the deductible, reimbursement percentage and annual maximum for each category or insured person.

Which care qualifies

Confirm eligible drugs, approved practitioners and the dental fee guide or reimbursement schedule. Check exclusions for treatments you expect to use.

When benefits start

Check waiting periods and how the plan treats existing conditions, medications and ongoing treatment.

How plans work together

Review workplace, spousal, association and government benefits, including how another plan may coordinate payments for you or a dependant.

How health coverage differs from other protection

A health and dental plan reimburses eligible expenses. It does not generally replace employment income or guarantee payment after a serious diagnosis.

Critical illness insurance
May provide a lump-sum benefit after diagnosis of a covered condition that meets the policy requirements.
Disability insurance
May replace a portion of income when an eligible illness or injury prevents you from working.
Travel insurance
May cover eligible emergency medical and other specified risks while travelling.
Provincial health coverage
Covers eligible publicly insured medical services according to provincial rules.

These forms of protection may complement one another, but they are not interchangeable.

Before you enrol

Questions about eligibility and value.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Treatment varies by plan. Some policies may exclude, restrict or limit coverage for existing conditions or medications. Other plans may offer different acceptance arrangements subject to specific requirements.

Can I get coverage after leaving my employer?

Potentially. Some plans offer conversion or guaranteed-acceptance options if you apply within a specified period after losing group coverage. Deadlines and eligibility rules apply.

Can I purchase coverage for my entire family?

Many insurers offer individual, couple and family options. Eligibility, dependant definitions and premiums vary.

Is every health and dental plan worth the cost?

Not necessarily. Compare expected eligible benefits, limits and out-of-pocket costs with the premium. Insurance is designed to transfer risk, not guarantee that every policyholder receives more in reimbursements than they pay.

I own a company. Is personal insurance or group benefits more appropriate?

That depends on the number of eligible employees, business structure, budget and coverage objectives. Employers should also explore our Group Benefits offering for workforce plans.
